This film is an instant classic and will remain timeless because it doesn't get too deep into technology. In other words, it's a great sci-fi story that is not concerned with how things work, just that they do work.

And, one problem with that is, sometimes things break. Such was the case with a passenger spacecraft with a marshall and his captive as a pair of those passengers.

The ship crashes on a harsh alien planet, so survival is the first order of business. That evolves into a battle for survival. I felt that the script excellently increased the tension in the film by allowing Riddick to escape, and rather than this being a horror flick about a serial killer, that fear is transferred to alien species capable of ripping people apart.

Oh, and, the sun goes out every 20 years during a very long eclipse. Riddick is no longer a terrifying serial killer but the only man capable of actually dealing with the aliens.

It's a shame there's no Dolby Atmos remix, but the original audio is still pretty impressive. A great first 4K release from Arrow.

A great movie anyway, so lets review this disk. I bought it for the 4k plus extras. Extras first - a decent amount, though a shame several are literally the cast on the phone and nothing new from Vin Diesel.

However David Twohy contributes and all told its good as previous releases have been lacking. The animation episode is good to have included and i hadn't seen it.

You get both theatrical and extended cuts, both in 4k which is unusual. The 4k release itself is quite grainy at the start, I suppose this is a B-Movie so was never intended for this format.

It does still good however and provides a good picture format, especially once you are on planet. You do get just the 4k disk, no blu ray or DVDs.

But why would you want those? The whole point of this release is a 4k format - you wouldn't buy this film again like I have! Arrow have taken the cheapest route possible.

Not including a Blu-ray Disc leaves people wishing to view this flick and its myriad extras solely dependant on 4k resolution and not on the Blu-ray format.

I for 1 feel cheated with the blu Ray format lacking. Pitch Black was Vin Diesels main entry into mainstream Hollywood. His aggressive character Riddick being a prisoner on-board a crashed spaceship facing a significant alien species, was clearly something different when it was first released.

Watching Pitch Black on a small screen, I felt it looked cheaply produced, due to the filter used in the cinematography, but this rapidly changed during the second half of the movie, when the pace of the film changes rapidly.

Invariably Vin Diesel really is the highlight of the movie for a change , along with quite a reasonable supporting cast, and a spectacular enemy that really is worth waiting to see.

Originality isn't high in Pitch Black, and other movies such as Aliens are better, but Pitch Black is a well put together Sci -Fi Movie that deserves a watch.

Stylish and suspenseful, Pitch Black's a fine cult movie. The look's wonderful; director David Twohy wisely keeps his monsters hidden, showing them only in quick cuts.

The planet they inhabit is bathed in unexpected colours and dusk is evoked with palpable menace. If Pitch Black feels like an old B-movie at times, that just adds to the effect.

A cleaner, polished look may have strangled the spookiness. As it is the imagery and set pieces are fabulous. It's a powerfully unique film visually.

When a transport ship loses control pilot Carolyn Fry Radha Mitchell tries jettisoning passengers. Her co-pilot, Greg Owens Simon Burke , stops her, and they end up stranded on a desert planet with three suns.

The crew include antique dealer Paris P. Riddick, used to pitch black jails, had surgery which allows him night vision.

This comes in handy when the crew realise that nightfall is close and a race of nocturnal winged carnivores are stalking them.

The characterisation's a bit vague and thin. Not much time's spent establishing secondary characters, so their relationships are hard to guess.

When they are developed they're pretty generic. Paris, for instance, is your basic silly fop. Of the supporting cast my favourite was Keith David as Abu, a Muslim on a pilgrimage with three boys.

He's kind, brave and intelligent, which you don't see much in fictional Muslims. At the centre of the story are Fry, Johns and Riddick, who make a complex trio; their natures evolve throughout the film.

Riddick's dealt with somewhat sentimentally towards the end, which exemplifies the plot's mainstream goals. That said, some of its developments are genuinely unexpected.

The writers take Fry and Johns down interesting paths. Vin Diesel's a much better actor than he's given credit for.

The way he moves between menace and leadership here is subtly effective, rivalling work by more accepted actors. He may be a beefcake, but that doesn't mean he's a one note performer.

Radha Mitchell and Cole Hauser also do well, though this is Diesel's film. You can see why Riddick became popular.

Diesel lends charisma to an average, predictable role, making more of it than others would or could. With the help of tight plotting suspense is maintained, and there's some nice gory kills.

One thing which sets Pitch Black apart from other recent films of its type is its minimalism. Its most action-packed scenes show very little.

That describes David Twohy's most artistically adept movie, the raw and dusty "Pitch Black. This cult movie starts off as your average gang of embattled, ill-matched castaways struggling to survive, but it that becomes utterly brilliant as it slowly slips from gritty sci-fi to harrowing, claustrophobic horror.

And yes, even Vin Diesel gives an awesome performance in this one. After a meteor storm, a sleeper transport crashes on a desolate desert planet.

Most of the passengers survive, including a stowaway kid and a dangerous prisoner, Riddick Vin Diesel.

Unfortunately, it turns out that the entire planet is a desert because it's blasted by three suns all throughout the day, and the survivors have little food, water or shelter.

Oh yeah, and Riddick has broken out. To find the necessities, a small group led by Carolyn Fry Radha Mitchell sets out across the desert -- and discovers a swarm of vicious omnivorous creatures in a cave.

Fortunately they can't come out into the light. But when the group finds a geological survey station, they learn that a monthlong eclipse is about to fall over the planet -- meaning the creatures will soon eat them all if they don't escape from the desolate planet, and some of them aren't gonna make it.

Personally I haven't liked David Twohy's work except the sci-fi film "Arrival," but "Pitch Black" is the kind of brilliant cult movie that almost makes up for an otherwise okay-to-bad filmography.

This is not a polished space opera, but a dingy, grimy, dirty sci-fi movie full of recognizably ugly technology and stained morals -- not to mention some truly grotesque deaths.

And not all of them are from the winged beasties either think chest impalement. And Twohy gives the movie a very bleak, vaguely disturbing look -- endless chalky deserts filled with bones, grimy ships torn to pieces, empty skies, and searing pale light that makes everyone look half dead.

Even the beautiful colourful expanses of space seem vaguely ominous. But the whole thing suddenly becomes jump-in-your-seat scary when the monsters attack, and start eating people as they run.

The one problem? And the feeling of suspense is heightened by sharp-edged, pared-down dialogue "You're dancing on razor blades here" and a warped sense of humor -- we're assured that "No similarity to actual persons or predators, living or dead, is intended or should be inferred.

The characters are a pretty mixed bag, and there's always the haunting realization that most of them would easily turn on each other to save themselves -- and in fact, the main character even does that in the first few minutes of the film.

There's benevolent Muslim pilgrims, a hard-nosed bounty hunter, a prissy dude who hoards booze, and an annoying urchin of ambiguous gender. As for the leads, Diesel gives a pretty good performance as a wisecracking killer with a distinctly creepy edge ew, he took a hair sample and "shine" eyes that let him see in the dark.

But I was most impressed by Mitchell's Fry, as a selfish hardened leader who learns to defend other people's lives in a crunch. Definitely worth it for sci-fi buffs.

This is the first time I saw Vin Diesel and I knew it certainly would not be the last. His character is perfect like that incredible body and voice and the special effects are primo.

Diesel OWNS this picture, even though he is backed by an exceptional cast of characters. Whoever chose the virtual unknown for the part should have gotten a hefty bonus.

He was absoulute perfection in a damn good movie. Definately a thumbs up. We have a space ship crash landing on a barren planet.

Plus, they manage to do it at a time when monsters are lurking about, which is a trick since it only happens once every twenty-two freakin' years! Aboard we have an odd assortment of characters not to mention first-rate actors : Besides the usual expendibles, we have a captain who tries to kill everyone, a good guy who isn't, a bad guy whos the hero, and a little boy who's a girl.

You still with me? Faults: If the beasties come out every twenty-two years and ravage the entire planet, where did the big animals come from whose skeletons we see?

What the heck did animals that freakin' big drink? Or, even, where? How is it that they suddenly flew like bats after living in a hole all their lives?

How come one expendible gets sucked in the hole from just sticking his head in, when the captain manages to climb in the thing and wander around, then get out with barely a scratch?

Do these faults really matter? Only if you're a bit anal like myself. The acting and effects are so bloody good you forget about the problems and just get involved in the film.

By the way, I loved the kid. Also, the sudden appearance of an expendible who is promptly mistaken for the escaped convict was an unexpected kick.
