This lacks the big finish I hoped it would have, and in general the ideas feel a little less refined than they do in other Oshii films, but i still enjoyed this way more than i thought i would.

The tone and pacing are near perfect. I like how much information the film let's you infer, and the way the film portrays data really scratches an itch for me.

Sometimes you just have to make assumptions based on the limited knowledge you have, and things will go wrong just because you can't factor in every variable.

That wouldn't work in most mysteries, but it reeeaally works here. Every scene where the characters try to piece together a full picture from the scattered bits of information they have is so good, and i honestly wish the film was all that.

That would limit the audience to "Rainey Chevako and no one else," but I'd appreciate it at least! Like the ova, this is a character driven series instead of the expected mecha action.

The mecha action is there, and the animation is great, but the character writing is the main focus. I think like the film continuity series as a whole has an issue where everything gets resolved and then the episode or film ends.

We don't get to see the consequences of violating the law to save thr city or the consequences to the goverment for trying to cover it up.

It has some jovial moments, but for the most part is a lot more serious. It's also just as good, if not a bit better. The voice cast is still really solid, despite it being mostly different VA's, and the animation is still really good.

It does have some really slow parts at time, but the ending is so worth it and is genuinely excellent in every way. For the longest time I've always had a distant interest in Patlabor.

A constant intrigue. I'm a huge fan of Mamoru Oshii but it was probably swamped by both his more acclaimed work as well as the far more popular mecha-anime from around the same time period.

It always felt like that one series that was sitting a top a shelf that was just too far to reach. I've seen people describe the Patlabor franchise as a hidden gem and a criminally underrated masterpiece.

After viewing it myself? I wholeheartedly agree. The visuals are as beautiful as you'd expect from Oshii. Light glows like television static, caught by waves and screens.

As if to alert us to the strangeness of this wold, Patlabor begins with a suicide made to look natural. A man leaps from a ledge of a city under construction, into the sea.

The world is no longer built for humans, but machines Labors and code. If Oshii knows how to make this incorporeal fear visible—through flashing screens, abstracted digital visuals—he knows that it derives from something human.

Their dark interiors are overexposed by the light outside that glows like static. I expected somewhat of an action movie based on the artwork, and I couldn't have been more off the mark.

It's actually a dialog-heavy mystery about an operating system upgrade that causes giant mech robot workers to go haywire and the division investigating the cause of it before the damage becomes cataclysmic.

It's super technical about the details, from the tech to real estate development to noise frequencies, which I appreciated, even if I found it difficult to follow along with the fast-paced dialog at times.

It kept my attention and there was a lot I liked about it, but I'm not itching to queue up the sequels. Previo a su salto al occidente con Ghost in the Shell.

I wanna start this off by saying that this is not the most meaningful 5 stars I've ever given. Has what is likely my favorite dastardly plot in all of cinema.

I've always loved big robots. As I kid I would try and make myself fall asleep by imagining piloting around in a giant robo-suit.

I never knew what the hell was going on anytime I caught an episode of Gundam on Toonami, but damn was I ever there for it.

Patlabor is the story of a Division of Mecha-cops who are trying to find out why other mechs in Tokyo are going haywire. Beautiful animation, a tight story, some broad but engaging characters, and did I mention it has mech suits?

The Early Days. Now I'm coming back after watching all 47 episodes of the TV series, the 16 New Files OVA episodes, the original seven again, and the music video for KMFDM's "Juke Joint Jezebel" ; after all that background-accumulating, I was much more excited to revisit Patlabor 2 than this one, which was rapidly becoming an afterthought as the fondness in my memory somehow dimmed after only half a year, but this first Patlabor movie really is incredible.
