If the answer Blade Runner Poster write down at the end of the scene is the same note you made at the opening, you now have another important question to ask: Why is this scene in my script? The company resists the takeover but in the end relents. Thanks for sharing your view. Rotten Tomatoes. Lockhart finally realizes that Volmer is actually West Sandmann Baron. Again its bullshit fed to us all our lives that we need to make it to the top and its looked down upon if you have no ambition. Lockhart comes up against strict rules on visiting times which is only a few hours work time cant see anyone until have finished work taking up YOUR life.
Lockhart meets the women who was top at xerox for a number of years who by the fact she was institutionalised before she came to SPA suggests she had a breakdown and was starting to see the error of her ways and was starting to see the bigger picture and could be construed as almost a whistle blower.
But she wasnt entirely sure and therefore went along with it still. Most companies are about greed they expect you to do there bidding and to dont care abut your health or what effects it has outside of work i.
Corporations take as much as they can, whilst feeding the idea they care but what they are giving you it tainted the money the idea you are successful in life which is the water the SPA persons are drinking.
The villagers feel in a way shafted or that something is not right which is like a company where those at the TOP have no idea why the lower workers feel victimised or unhappy about certain things and quite often can be laid off or used when it suits the company as were the villagers by the Barron.
Some are infact in on it though and also want to get higher. He could go to prison and be shafted by a 12 inch black cock or he stays with the company and does there bidding and be fed tainted water instead through a tube both ways he is being shafted just through different means.
The barron wants the new union with Hanna as said before this could be seen as the second attempt at a merger the first having been with the sister which was left in ruins and the scapgoat was Lockhearts father and lockheart survived without knowing what happened.
As with most mergers they are infact takeovers and sometimes hostile takeover Hanna as the Barron said would be like her mother where first of all they would resist but would relent in the end.
Rather like a hostile takeover. The company resists the takeover but in the end relents. Lockhearts teeth failing out etc I think are the health risks involved in going down this route of giving all you energies and life to the company.
You dont realise you are sick until its too late and that you are choosing materialistic things over what your life really needs and you can end up having a break down due to the energies being lost in the SPA they dehydrate you drain you of everything until you are an empty dried up shell then look for a way of getting rid of you.
Which when need be is to make you fish food and sacrifice you for the good of the corporation or the Barron. Lockheart realises whats going on but pretends to go along with it.
But infact he hasnt been brainwashed and is waiting for his moment. The merger of the corporations is taking place as you see in the phonecall back to the office but its not going well and the Barron is trying to merge with Hanna.
Once the other company realises whats going on it resists as does hanna to the Barron. Lockheart wants to stop the merger and Hanna no longer trusts the Barron or as in the corporations it realises its a takeover and fights back.
Killing the merger barron. When Lockhart crashes into the car you see that Lockheart realises that his company no longer has any hold over him or indeed ever did its just you think they do and that he has seen the truth behind corporate greed.
He has stopped the merger and when they try and order him back into the car he realises he doesnt have to do as they say.
He knows this and possibly the reason for his sneering smile and the fact he has saved the other company it could well be that he could be in line to get to the top there or marry Hanna.
Which to me alludes to someone ridiculing going away to relax like a holiday and that you should be in touch with the office all the time via phone or email etc and that corporations dont want you away relaxing even though its your holiday.
We think we are well in our lives but its only in this day and age a material wellness and there is a cure for that.
To stop and think about what life is really about as we have enslaved ourselves to work and the big corporations.
Such a great explanation this needs to be made into a video I understood the movie but ur analysis really helped me understand the vision or the true meaning thanks.
Her father has a suspicious look on his face at that time. When Hannah confronts Lockhart for how he made her hope she could leave, Lockhart smiles and gives a vague answer as if been brainwashed like others.
Can there be an angle where Volmer somehow managed to duplicate himself, as in his desires inside Lockhart? That could be!
I could see an argument for it. That is possible. I think the Lockhart at the end is a clone of young Volmer with Lockharts face. Lockhart is dead and Volhmer wins.
Remember he said Lockhart was the key he had been waiting for. Agree with Bryan, you literally broke down the movie for me. Now it makes so much sense!
Thank you sir! I actually am not sure that he becomes Volmer…I think the whole daydream analogy is a good one. Never thought of that.
I think Hannah is a made up figure to make the story make sense. None of the wellness people actually ever existed. Sorry for my bad English. Same thing happened to her and saved her life when she was born and thrown into water.
But, when Volmer was killed by Hannah, his body got eaten by eels. Is that really him? And in using the cure he somehow got his missing teeth back.
And by seeing the amazing results he started to get a sense of power. Cause in the beginning he is obsessed with getting more power and prestige at the company — and I think maybe the movie is hinting that we never truly change.
He got his full set of teeth after the scene where he was forced to ingest the eels. Did he ever made it out from that strapped in device which was meant to collect life essence?
Lockhart meets a mysterious young girl named Hannah who, among others, doses herself with a mysterious fluid from small, cobalt-colored bottles.
Patient Victoria Watkins and residents of the nearby town regale a fascinated Lockhart with the history of the spa.
It was built on the ruins of a castle owned years ago by a baron, who desired an heir of pure blood and married his sister. Learning she was infertile, he performed hellish experiments on the peasants to find a cure.
He succeeded, but after finding the carelessly buried bodies of his victims, the peasants stormed the castle and set it on fire.
They captured the baron's pregnant sister and the baby was cut from her womb before she was burned. The baby was thrown into the local aquifer, but somehow survived.
Lockhart attempts to escape the center but finds no one is allowed to leave. After gifting Hannah a ballerina figurine, Lockhart bikes into town with her help, leaving her in a bar and seeking out a translator for Pembroke's German medical dossier.
He learns that the people of the spa suffer from dehydration despite the water they imbibe from the aquifer.
Lockhart returns and gets into a fight with a man who was dancing with Hannah. He is rescued by Dr.
Volmer, by whom the locals are curiously cowed. Lockhart discovers the transfusion wing of the spa is a front for macabre medical experiments, and that the water from the local aquifer possesses unique properties — toxic to humans, but with life-restoring properties for the eels living in the water.
The baron had devised a process to filter the water through the bodies of humans and distill it into a life-giving essence; Volmer uses the patients as filters for this process.
This "cure" is ingested by Hannah, Volmer, and his staff to gain vastly lengthened lifespans. Lockhart realizes that his leg is not broken and he is being kept prisoner.
Volmer subjects Lockhart to nightmarish treatments, warping his mind until he believes he is insane. Hannah perceives this change and gives Lockhart back the ballerina figurine, breaking him out of his delirium.
Hannah has her first menstruation, and Volmer marries her. During the reception, he leads her to a secret room in the ruins of the castle and begins to sexually assault her.
Lockhart confronts Volmer and realizes Volmer is the baron and Hannah is his daughter, the baby who was thrown into the well; both have been aging very slowly due to the "cure".
In the ensuing fight, Volmer's face is revealed to be a mask hiding his hideous burns. Lockhart sets Volmer and the castle on fire, but is overpowered by Volmer.
Hannah saves Lockhart by killing her father, who falls into the aquifer and is eaten by the eels. Lockhart and Hannah escape on her bicycle as fire engulfs the center, and crash into a car carrying Lockhart's employers, having come to retrieve him and Pembroke.
Lockhart tells his employers that Pembroke died, and is ordered into the car. Unable to abandon Hannah, he rides away with her, smiling as they finally escape the asylum.
Principal photography for the film began on June 22, [8] and took place mainly at Babelsberg Studio co-producer in Potsdam , Germany.
Another great part of the film was shot at former royal Hohenzollern Castle , in the German municipality of Bisingen. The water tank scenes took two weeks to film.
DeHaan and the director communicated through an intercom , and DeHaan wore a buoyancy and body-positioning waist harness connected with wires and an oxygen tank.
The directors used a rubber drill in the scene where Dr. Brennan, the facility's dentist, drills through Mr.
Lockhart's healthy tooth without anesthesia. According to DeHaan, he was genuinely nervous and his reaction was used in the filming.
In the car crash scene, DeHaan was placed into a harness inside a device described by Bryan Alexander of USA Today as being similar to a rotisserie before being tossed around.
DeHaan stated that he experienced his sole filming injury there, in which his arm was dislocated from and then relocated into the socket in its shoulder.
The German actors used in the scene in which Lockhart is assaulted by elderly people had no prior experience in film acting.
Alexander wrote that this scene "wasn't as torturous as it appears. The soundtrack album consists of the film's score plus a stripped-down version of a Ramones song " I Wanna be Sedated " which is performed by Mirel Wagner.
It subsequently received a theatrical release in the United States on February 17, , by 20th Century Fox , after initially being slated for a September 23, release date.
In the United States, 20th Century Fox premiered a second exclusive commercial during the 51st Super Bowl on February 5, , which resembled a medication advertisement.
But it turned out you were watching a trailer for a new supernatural horror film. Two days before the film's U. A Cure For Wellness was one of the very first movies I put out on that list as it had everything I adore in a movie.
Complicated storyline, great actors, curious premise, etc. Is the movie worth your seeing it? I adored it. It was different than your standard super hero fare of course.
The stories are very very similar in structure and form. Regardless, I loved it. You are here. You love it. Pembroke back to us.
No, wait. Can I make a quick comment about utilizing Switzerland more for movie locations? I mean, really? There literally is no more beautiful location on the planet.
My father-in-law has a home there and have been lucky enough to get to stay there a couple of times. Like Clouds of Sils, I was just transfixed every time Gore Verbinski showed us the mountains around the castle.
Never mind the fact that this castle is in Germany. Chop chop. Like I said, the basic plot line for this movie is simple enough.
Some random American corporation which looks a heck of a lot like Enron to me is cooking its books day after day.
But in the middle of said cooking, they begin looking into a merger that will make them all richer than the dreams of avarice.
Only glitch? Their CEO, and chief book cooker, Mr. Pembroke, has gone AWOL. Worse yet? So someone has to go and fetch him. And the other alternative just had a heart attack.
So we have your young and earnest book cooker in training… I think we should send him! And so Lockhart Dane Dehaan heads to Switzerland.
But when he arrives, visiting hours are over, and every attempt to even find Pembroke is rebuffed. Every conversation with patients playing croquet, or chatting on the veranda, seems to indicate that all is not right here.
There are weird throbbing sounds coming from a blocked off area of the resort, patients are losing teeth prodigiously, and why is it that no one ever wants to leave?
Even though his leg is broken, and he should have other things on his mind instead… like survival. He shadows Pembroke at his spa treatments and in the sauna.
And yet, Lockhart is certain that something is keeping them there against their will. Lockhart — and the audience — is clearly aware that there is something wrong with the water.
When Lockhart meets Hannah she seems young, and yet mature simultaneously. There is something about her that is completely setting off all of his alarm bells.
She seems to be a patient, and yet more like a daughter to the head of the sanitarium, Volmer. And what is really going on in these treatments?
Well, Lockhart begins finding out first hand as the treatments start for him. The isolation chamber is a unique form of hell that will purge the chaos and ills of this world from his soul.
Volmer lets Lockhart know that the pain that he will experience is the toxins leaving his system. Enter the eels. Apparently they were originally considering putting real eels in the tank and then they realized what a terrible idea that was.
But even so, it was a terribly difficult scene to film. Lockhart had been wondering what these machines were for, but now he gets to see. And Volmer explains it to him as well.
It is through the eels and the waters of the castle that life is given. And it is from this contraption that this life is distilled.
More importantly though, Hannah. Hannah, due to her leaving of the castle with Lockhart, got her first period.
Which, apparently, was a fairly important day to Volmer. But why? So he marries his sister, but when he realizes she is infertile he begins doing horrible experiments on the peasants of the town.
Thus the terrible relationship between the town and the castle. And they eventually rise up and attack the baroness. But what is this? So they cut the baby from her womb and toss her baby into the aqueduct and burn her at the stake.
And at first it is believed that the baby died. She not only survived but she has taken years to reach puberty. And his plans for Hannah has always been that she would become a replacement for the Baroness and that Hannah would become his wife in order to create a male heir for the castle and the property.
But… HOW?! The Baron discovered the waters of the castle to hold amazing powers. Those powers? Long life. Long long long life.
The Baron realized there was something magical here. A human goes in, and out comes oil. So this is the secret of the cure for wellness.
The cure for wellness was framed as a fix for what ails us in this modern world. The worries of this life… the chaos of this life… come to the famous Switzerland Sanitarium and find your cure to the insanity of life.
Come to this spa and become the cure to someone who is desiring to never die. That is the trick of this movie.
Remember when Lockhart begins to write a letter that is similar to the letter that Pembroke sent back to the company? Half way through he realized what he was doing and he ripped it up.
He also hacked off the cast that was on his leg realizing that it was just a ruse meant to keep him at the castle. He realized that the Cure was anything but a cure.
Volmer, intent on creating his heir that he has waited for for the past years, ties up Hannah and is ready to impregnate her. But Lockhart, figuring out what is going on here and the danger that Hannah is in rushes to the basement to help her.
Apparently he had been medically gluing on faces to appear whole. Volmer gets read to to toss Lockhart into the eel tank that lives off the bodies of those that they extract the oils from.
Personally I believe that the movie explained above pretty solidly locks down what actually happened. But I doubt it.
Please tell me if you disagree. I will giggle and then show you how you are wrong. But I do think there is some serious ambiguity about the last 30 seconds of the movie.
If you remember, Lockhart and Hannah take off on the bike together. And half way down they wipe out crashing into the car of the company men who are on their way to retrieve Lockhart and Pembroke themselves.

Dane DeHaan in Gore Verbinskis Horrorthriller „A Cure for Wellness“. ein guter Job und am Ende Prostatakrebs oder ein tödlicher Busunfall. Lockhart wanted to be a corporate flyer and as with most corporate flyers something has to be sacrificed in order to get there and that is normally family in this case discarding his mother.
She knows his only goal is to get to the top and when he gets what he wants which he says to her he will be moving up, she says he wont be coming back and she knows he will only spend more time in the office doing the companies bidding and whilst he may get her into a better place its only to make him feel better that he will hardly see her rather like top business people buying there kids everything as they feel guilty at spending time with them.
So the message to me is about choosing life over working for a faceless company who will use up take everything you have put into it chew you up a spit you out on the other side without you realising what has happened until its too late and its a message for everyone.
Lockhart a lot of people in life these days works for the company and he wants to be the best, he does the companies bidding and bends the rules to get what they want which they allow when its suits them.
They know the rules and as they say to him his bending of the rules is ameature to what they get away with. However his ameture attempts will get them caught when the merger happens.
So they offer him a deal as they know as Lockhart says, that it wont just be him that is taken down but someone on the board. The also know that Lockhart wants to get on and will be useful in the future because he is willing to bend the rules.
They say this when they talk about the guy who had the heart attack and how he was straight and a family guy and basically not suited to what they want.
So the deal is to get some washed out old hack pembrooke to be the fall guy and the merger will go ahead and lockart will in turn get a place on the board.
Lockhart goes to the spa where top business people are staying believing they are being cured. Mirror this and these top people believe that within the corporation they are special and have got to the top with they hard work and diligence and the company in turn has given them what they want in life.
Wealth and power as we live in a materialistic society where this appears to count for much more than real living and family etc.
They dont realise in the SPA that in actual fact they too are being used and once they have filtered what they want out of the body the will discard you.
This is the same in real life the company takes what it wants with you believing they care and when in fact they couldnt give a shit and soon as you become surpless to requirement you will be gotten rid off or as in Pembrooks case used as a scapegoat.
He gave them his life as did lockharts father and they shafted them when it suited them. On the way to the SPA he talks to the driver and this is me as after a breakdown I realised that getting to the top was not actually what I wanted in life it was just something that I wanted to look good in society and once you stop worrying or caring about a climbing the corporate ladder life becomes a lot simpler and happier as with the driver he was happy where he was and didnt buy into all the bullshit of not being anything in society just because he is not ambitious and is happy where he is.
Again its bullshit fed to us all our lives that we need to make it to the top and its looked down upon if you have no ambition.

He has a full set of teethe when he has the menacing smile at the end. It is possible that it was a psychiatric hospital and Lockhart burnt the building down and ran away with Hannah who was susceptible to influence as she was a vulnerable patient also.
This explains the bizarre nature of the movie and a lot of things that do not make sense. The only other way to explain his teethe is that the dehydration caused the hallucination of the moment when his tooth fell out, the moment his other tooth was pulled out and in the scenes where it showed him without teethe.
Unless it was just a movie mistake — but I think they made it quiet clear to showcase it in the end. Hi everyone. I found all points of view very interesting!
